oxygen sensor

just follow up on a few threads about the o2 sensors, this may be not 100% good gen but it made sense to me when a mate explained it. apparently the o2 sensor measures the exhaust fuel/ air mixure after combustion and sends information back the the ECU and if it is out of tolerance the fuell fed to the injectors and fuel/ air mix is adjusted to ensure all remains good. so if the o2 sensor is sick all sorts of fuel problems can result. perhaps someone with more knowledge might like to comment.

also test drove 2.0 litre turbo VW diesel golf, simply awsome. merlinp

the O2 (lambda)sensors you are talking about monitor the mixture for your exhaust output to give the computer feedback about the exhuaust. In earlier commodores (say 1990's) the Lambda sensor had a limited role to swing between 2 predetermined sets of values for the fuel/ignition mapping in your engine. On the later cars the lamba sensor has a greater role. thats why with newwer cars they seem to besensative to what type of fuel they are running, and say things like if thier air filters are blocked up.

Often with a dodgy lambda sensor the car will operate in safety mode which will run very rich mix mixtures and consercative timing. its often easy to tell as there is a rotten egg smell coming out hte exhaust, the exhaust pipe is covered in soot, and your fuel economy goes to ****.
