What part did you replace?
Did you do any tests or just throw parts at it?

I plugged an ob2 scan tool in and it told me the code. I deleted the code a few times and it kept coming up with the same code. When I erase the code and drive it it's fine and light doesn't come on .then after I switch car off and then restart and drive again the engine light is on. I replaced what I thought was the sensor on the back off the gearbox but now I'm not sure if it was the right one.

Ok cool. Need more info to help more.

Which sensor did you think you replaced? What did it look like, and why did you replace it?

Your transmission speed signal input is missing, maybe a wire connection problem symtons can trigger that code are as follows:
  • A faulty valve body
  • A faulty input/turbine speed sensor
  • One or more faulty shift solenoids
  • A shorted, open, or otherwise damaged circuit
  • Contaminated transmission fluid
  • A faulty engine coolant temperature sensor

you shouldn't drive to much to avoid damage to your transmission.

Find that on Google? I read something similar on the first page.

I replaced the one on the rear of the gearbox but reading other comments I think it's behind the torque converter in the front of the box . I am very confused.

Sounds like you replaced the output speed sensor, have a look towards bow housing if its not on the side it maybe up top, I'm not up to these current cars I'm more old school so I cant say for sure, someone else maybe able to confirm it, unless you can get a workshop manual.

I am going through the P0717 nightmare hence reading this posting.
There are 2 Speed Sensors on the 4L60 Transmission.
Front INPUT Sensor not accesable unless you remove the tranny and Rear OUTPUT Sensor replacable but you need fairy hands to do it.
Either one are reluable Sensors and almost NEVER FAIL.
A losson I learned but replacing the OUTPUT VEHICLE SPEED Sensor twice!
There is an American Veterin Mechanic that advises the problem is in the TCM. The light blue wire from INPUT Sensor does not earth correctly. Usually connected to Pin 45 on the TCM. The earch system in the TCM is faulty. You can cut and connect this wire to cars body earth. Suggest you find the uTube video under P0717 Fix.
Cheers...
