plug could be used for something else?

Dear ris00,

I assume your car does not have a sunroof, otherwise the plug wouldn't be sitting there unconnected!

If all VY's have this, then it could be used to power a boot mounted Power Socket (eg. to run car fridges, torches etc) ? Yes?

Exactly where is it located, in the driver's side rear quarter panel?

... and also ..... a stupid question ... why would sunroof cabling run through the rear of the car, wouldn't it be more direct (sensible, cheaper) through the front B-pillars into the roof cavity?

Is the trailer wiring harness actually plugged into a plug? Because a lot of tow bar installers will just wire it up using joiners onto the actual wires and not use the holden supplied plug. This is due to it being cheaper and not having to have plugs for every type of car.
The location of this plug is the same location as the trailer wiring connector, so it may well be the trailer wiring connector.

the plug is on the RHS as looking in the boot behind the black carpet. Only a small one it comes off the wiring loom to the rear of the car

ok, As Dr. Rob says, it is for the Sun roof. Had a look on mums car, found it connected and tried disconnecting it, sun roof didn't work any more!
But as people have said, wouldn't it have gone up the A or B pillar?
