i was considering bashing the inside of the hole with a screwdriver

Use the right tool for the job for a start. And do it right the first time dont just dodge it up

I would, been through two winters without leaks so far.

What about the summer/autumn/spring rain??? did it leak then???

I used a rubber grommet for mine and trimmed underneath it to suit the hole and tested it using the hose and it didn't leak. Gonna get the holes welded soonish
