I havent tried it, I researched it. Was thinking of making one a while back. it is do able, using wood is and old hot rodders trick, and it does work but i dont know what wood works best, but I do know it must be hard wood to prevent air leaching through the wood grain.

I've seen on other sites success with nylon chopping boards cut to shape and milled dead flat when not used with an air/fuel mixture (air only)
Even then I've seen plywood used as a sandwich plate under carbies on old farm cars to get em up and running.

OP if you feel like replacing your home made waste of time each week or day or however long it takes to self destruct and leave fragments of crap in your poor engine, go for it.
