The window track have 2 little white plastic sliders that break after a while. Take your door trim off and take a look, they're not very expensive to replace.

Power steering groan is usually caused by air entering the system, check the fluid level and make sure it is nice and red with no air bubbles. Get someone to turn the steering lock to lock (with the engine running) while you watch the reservoir. Failing that rebuild or replace the ps pump.

Alternatively, the power steering could be where the column passes through the rubber grommet on the firewall. It can dry out, a spot of silicone spray works wonders.

yep, my VR statey used to groan close to full lock, it was the rubber grommet at the firewall. was as dry as a nun's c***. it's just about impossible to reach from the inside (unless you're a midget)

Back when I first got my VS, the steering groaned heaps bad when turning the steering wheel, it sounded like a faulty P/S pump, so I went to see a couple of steering specialists about it and was told I needed a new P/S pump and a new rack. Then I read on here about the dry seal (mentioned above) where the steering rod passes through the firewall. I just soaked it heaps with WD 40, from the engine bay side, and the noise went away completely and has never come back some 8 or so years later.. Glad I didnt listen to the so called experts and fit a new rack and pump at the time as it wouldnt have fixed the groaning noise, which was the only problem it had with the steering.

I have the same problem also, how hard is it to get it to the rubber grommet? Will I have enough room to spray with WD40?

Hey wardell76, did you have any luck getting access to the grommet? I have the exact same issue with the severe groaning and just tried spraying the grommet (a orange rubber cap??) on the engine bay side which is what I hope is correct. Does anyone have an image of the grommet to make sure i'm on the right track? Also, how exactly did you get access to it, I ended up just spraying the sh*t out of it from about 8 inches away... still groaning though. Cheers

Hey there.nope, no luck at all.i reckon we sprayed the same thing as it still groans and I wasnt 100% sure it was the correct grommet. Looked with a torch for 30mins but couldnt find where it comes out from the firewall.any pictures would be greatly appreciated.
