Just wondering on the goods and the bads of this conversion. i have a mate thats looking into it. he already has a rb20det eng so his idea is that it wont cost any where near as much.

1. the goods?

2. the bads?

3. does it increase the power compared to the stock rb20det?

4. is it worthwile?

5. whats involved does the head bolt straight on?? i know about timing belt, tensioners, covers etc etc as the rb25head on rb30 block but is it any different than using a rb25det head?

6. does the rb20 have the same height head. ie does it use the same timing belt as the rb25??

7. what else is different between the rb25det and rb20det heads?

know about interanals of the rb30 block thats no worries it all would be done before wasking a rb20 head on.

any other hints and tips on the rb20det head on rb30 also would be great!
cheers!
Jason

i think u need to get the head machined and the water galleries lined up or something like that..... probably be beter selling the rb20det and buying an rb25de head as they pritty much bolt on without to much hassle at all ..

check out calaisturbo.com as they have plenty of info in this subject :0

don't bother puting the rb20 head on. it'll restrict the motor. you need a rb25 head to make it worthwhile. the rb25 head bolts straight on. only problem is it sits 12mm higher so you may have clearance issues with the stock inlet manifold and throttle body. REPEAT- Don't bother with RB20 head.

The difference in the heads is the cc rating of the chambers.

Yeah RB20det head will not bolt straight on. RB25de or det will not either but is around 100 times cheaper and easier than the rb20det. There was a place that sold the complete kit for the conversion for $2500 including rb25det head and everything needed to fit it (less turbo). You will also need the ECU (extra $500) to run the six coil system as the rb20 and 25 do not have a distributer. Try hunting for Zoom magazine #22 with has the complete conversion how to.

An RB25DE head will bolt straight on without any mods. A RB25DET needs oil gallery mods to suit the VCT operation. Also you need to use RB30 non turbo pistons to get the comp ratio correct turbo pistons drop it to about 6:1. The RB20 has a smaller bore size hence why those heads are no good. You need to drill and tap the front of the block for an extra cam belt tensioner. There is 240 odd pages on skylines australia and a full pdf file here.
