I heard a claim that in return for the vast government handouts to Holden, some government had demanded that GMNA take so many exported Commodores. The police special wasn't sufficient, so they had to take a few thousand LHD versions of the SSV as the Chev SS model. So it was a mere contractual obligation, and GMNA didn't promote it, expecting the small volume would sell itself.

I have heard much the same. Chances are there could be some validity to it - struggling to see any other conceivable reason for doing it, especially in the 1/2 arsed fkded up way they went about it.

They were limited in the amount of sedans exported and weren't allowed to export sport wagons and utes.

As I understand it, Holden were going to export half of there VE sales, but Obama started printing money to make him the USA look good and that raised our Aussie Dollar up and it was that that destroyed the whole plan.

When you undertake a deal to sell in another Nation you have plenty of commitments to deal with, so you have to have numbers of x y and z all in the deal.

They are entirely different things. Any tax a normal person gets back when they put in their tax return is an adjustment correcting an overpayment of income tax (usually) during the financial year.

Big business subsidys/handouts such as that in the car industry often are in the form of Govco paying money to the company for it to build x number of vehicles or carrying out R&D or similar. Other forms of payment may be in the form of a special reduced tax rate, subsidised energy or something else not available to most other companies.

Weather govco should provide these inducements is an entirely different argument.
