Let us know how you go;
I pulled my VR rack mostly apart, until the point were you need those 2 pins to un-spin that thing inside it. Gave up and put it back together to chuck in the corner (and not loose anything)

Requires a special tool to fit the teflon seals on the taper of the pinion shaft (under the red seal thingy.... dust cap).
And then it depends on the wear from the seals as to if that needs replacing/machining as it'll generally create a groove so new seals won't fix it... hate to say it but for $200ish a reco'd rack already done, it's hardly worth the hassle.

i put in a reco'd rack in my vp off ebay in 2011, haven't had any problems yet. think i paid $245 delivered with no changeover to a commercial address. put 30,000 kms on it so far. for the hassle of it your better off leaving it to professionals with the specialist tools and know how of doing thousands of them...

You can take the input part out and replace the shaft seal by taking it apart but leave the teflon seals alone and put it back and it will be all good ...worked for me in 2 separate cars ..even left the rack mounted still connected to the wheels. Seal is triple lipped but it easily can be done
