Does replacing Oxygen sensors increase performance?
does replacing your airfilter with one exactly the same increasee performance? well yes but **** all! the o2 sensor will just make it so the computer will know better how much fuel to give the engine. so yes if the ecu is dumping fuel like no tomorrow then yes it can, but not by a huge amount.

check the purge hose under the throttle body, it's common (apparently) for them to come off. mine was and it improved consumption by about 1.2 lts/100km(as per the trip computer). do the basics first, air filter, fuel filter(these have also been known to cause problems) good oil & filter every 10,000km(with a flush put through when you change it). get the tranny serviced, people always seem to forget about these. good tyres and wheel alignment won't hurt with the correct tyre pressures. hell, change the diff oil too as it's probably never even been looked at since new and it might seem queiter too. get a bottle of injector cleaner and put it through the fuel system (do this every time you change the oil) ifthe coolant is more than a couple of years old, change and flush the system also and probably fit an new thermostat as well. well maintained cars seem to run better and then if a problem does creep up at least it's easier to rule these things out straight away. if non of this makes any difference changing the O2 sensors may help, they do wear out but i'd only loook at them if it's a high milleage car though

edit:changing the O2 sensors will only increase performance in term of economy....but only then if they were shagged in the first place

As said to me lol:
1)Plugs and leads
2)Air Filter, Fuel Filter, Oil Filter
3)Engine Temp Sensor
4)Coolant Temp Sensor
5)Throttle Body and IAC valve clean
6)O2 Sensors
7)Knock Sensors
8)Transmission Service
9)Injectors!!! (I'm on this one right now!!!)

I have fought a never ending battle with economy, it's good to have fixed all these little things though since most had never been touched since the car rolled off the production line. At most i get 360kms out of a tank before and after i had all these things done (bar the injectors). I'm up to the stage now of either cleaning out and rebuilding or replacing injectors which i think has been the cause of the problem from the start. Lumpy idle (whilst not to the point of stalling, revs stay constant), poor economy (between 14.5 and 16.5L per 100kms) and a massive flat spot under big acceleration between 3rd to 4th gears (in the low rev range of these gears), almost like the injectors are flooding the cylinders.

If these symptoms sound familiar, run a bottle of injector cleaner and premium fuel through the system and see if there's any improvement in economy. I did and the next tank the car felt better and i managed to squeeze an extra 75kms out of it! (Used to get around 280kms to a tank). I would like to get fuel lines and tank cleaned out too, but i've heard that's meant to be more expensive than a blow job by the queen sooooo just rebulding/replacing injectors will do me fine. Will keep you updated as soon as i do get it done to how things went and if there's been any improvement.

Cheers all,
Boojakz.

well you've covered most, does the car use oil at all, possibly suggest a compression test as 280-350km from a tank (59,63ltrs??) is really poor also maybe bite the bullet and take it to Holden and get it hooked up, there is a lot of info they can get from the ECU. another thing to check is the fuel pressure, if this is considerably above what it should be it could cause your kind of fuel consumption.

Just to clarify, i actually haven't done the injectors yet. Compression is fine, fuel pump and pressure is all good, doesn't chew up any oil at all etc Engine is like brand new, has been babied its whole life. I'm taking it to a injector specialist on monday and he's gonna hook it up to a machine to diagnose if the injectors are at fault (which i'm fairly sure they are, seeing as i gained improvements after running a bottle of injector cleaner through the tank) 59L tank. I'm getting on average between 14.5L and 16.5L per 100 kms. Was mid 15's but recently had a bad tank last tank (after replacing fuel filter). Roughly getting between 340 to 380kms to a tank now. When i did start with it all though, i was only just managing to get 300kms. So shall get the injector check done on monday hopefully will be the cause of the problem, get them reconditioned and hopefully economy should be down to 12L to 13L per 100kms, getting 450kms to 500kms to a tank.

Will let you know how i go on monday,
Cheers,
Boojakz.

Oh p.s. Had the car hooked up to a diagnostics machine the other week at an auto elecs. Only thing that came up was Knock Sensors which i replaced that day. ECU was cleared, re-checked, came back normal, took back following week to see if any errors were logged, None...So yep.

Cheers again,
Boojakz.
