lol. what was done to yours originally to make the 140ish mark? was just yella terra heads and cam?

also those bennet high ports (the alloy heads you speak of) are 4 grand.... i have looked. not worth it when VN are still better.

Yeah especially when I've spent 1/3 on my motor that my mate spent on his whole motor (I'm pretty sure alot more then 6k was originally spent on it) and mine has already overtaken his. Altho apparently if he changes to a Holley (still running a quaddy) and puts a bigger cam in he should get a bit more. But yeah definitely not worth the cost when VN heads do much more for a lot less.

Still got the other 308. It's just a stock bottom end, I just chucked new bearings in it (still original rings lol, wouldn't of had time to bed them in), dynotec cam (marginally bigger then wat I'm running with my VN heads), yella terra bathurst heads, edelbrock performer manifold and a 600 holley. Made 146rwkw.

Wow that all sounds very interesting. I guess the vn heads are definately worth saving up for, especially with a decent sized cam tp liven the motor up. Ill still upgrade my brakes and sway bars and invest in a strut brace before the quest for mpre power. I dont know if any pf you have driven a vb or a vc but the brakes are truly shocking and they suffer a fair bit of body roll. I also need to invest in a vlt diff and tailshaft and get myself a t5 before i go for more power. So much to do and so little money for another month. At least i have time on my side to plan my build really well, hence all the questions i ask

another small and dull update. i removed the 'commodore' badges on both the front guards as well as the 'radial tuned suspension' badge on the right hand side of the boot. the suspension badge was wonky as and the commodore ones just look ugly imo so i ditched them and removed all the glue so you cant tell they were ever there. i also took of the 4.2 badge and replaced it with a 5.0 badge.

i also got all my brake and tail lights working at long last. on vb/vc there is only 1 bulb each side for tail/brake light whereas on the vk/vl there is 2 i believe. the vb/vc have the extra slot for the 2nd bulb on each side but the wiring loom doesnt match for it so im going to splice the existing wiring for the brake light only and use it to power the spare bulb slot so that i can have 2 brake lights on each side of the car to make it easier for people to see when im braking at night time.

ill be doing that tomorrow and will grab pictures of the mirrors, debadging and the lighting.

good news is i have now got a second job and have already saved $1000 out of the $4000 of the last of my uni fees so in no time ill have money to play with cars again. im thinking of saving up and upgrading to a vx/ve ss at the end of the year with a small loan to help with the difference between the money ill have available for a new car and what it will cost. with the money i should be able to save by christmas, the money i get from my inheritance from my great nan at christmas and what the vb is worth i should have around $15k at christmas time. i doubt ill keep and upgrade the vb and will probably get something newer so in the meantime ill just be doing cheap things to the vb like adding the extra brake lights in (so far all it has cost me is the cost a pair of bulbs $3 haha)

Small update, a very negative one at that.

I had the old girl checked over by my local holden specialist/wrecker and the list of things that came back that need doing was quite extensive and is as follows:

one new wheel bearing $150
leaking power steering pump needs replacing $150 for 2nd hand or $250 for recon
exhaust manifold gaskets leaking $?
rocker cover gaskets leaking $?
wheel alignment and balance needed $80
service needed $190
retune needed $80
engine and transmission need steam cleaning to determine engine leaks $55 for steam cleaning $? for repairs

im comfortable to replace the power steering pump myself along with the rocker cover gaskets. i reckon i can do the power steering pump for $50 to $100 myself and the rocker cover gaskets for $20 to $30. i might have a go at the exhaust manifold gaskets as well which should cost about $20. im going to hand clean the underside of the engine and transmission with degreaser, i know it will take a few hours of hard work but id rather that than spend an unnecessary $55. the engine doesnt seem to use any oil so im not convinced that its leaking, i think it might just be dried on oil from a previous leak or something. the gearbox feels like it is leaking though as its very clunky and has started to jump out of 1st and 3rd gears.

its now pretty likely that ill fix the bulk of the mechanical work, bar any engine/transmission leaks and sell the car on and upgrade to either a VT II SS, 300ZX TT or WRX.

will be a shame to see the old girl go

Very thirsty VT & VH project under way! YAY!!
Some of that seems pretty expensive. You can definitly save yourself a lot of money in that list. Wheel bearings aren't too tricky. check this out. I changed these to hubs to suit different discs but the bearings and placement is the same. http://forums.justcommodores.com.au/vb-vk-holden-commodore-1978-1985/100012-vh-brake-upgrade.html . Steam clean?? Really?? Just get it to a car wash that you do yourself. coat it in degreaser (after it's cooled a little) then go to town. Or if you have a mate with a high pressure cleaner even better. I take a jack with me sometimes to get in there nice and deep like! If you can replace the power steering pump you'll be fine with the exhaust manifold gaskets. A little more of a pain but doable.

Fix this stuff and clean her up and send her onto someone who'll continue to love her like she should be! IMO. Good luck.
