I found the cost of spares very interesting from these online sellers,

Being I bought a number of items from them in Sep 21 > Nov 21 for my Adventra,
And other items for a number of years for other cars.

I have been thinking of servicing my 5L40E Transmission for a couple of weeks, to get it ready for my road trip to the High Country,
So I have been watching RTK65 Transmission Kits on eBay, "Not Tagging Them, just watching them as I have few favorite sellers"
One particular seller in question is "Sparebox_auto"

I have been watching this item -
https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/155275976997?mkevt=1&mkpid=0&emsid=e11050.m43.l1123&mkcid=26&ch=osgood&euid=4335b2e81db24d11bf65936caab4872f&bu=43144164529&osub=-1~1&crd=20230115005911&segname=11050

and the Advertised price was $31.16 with free postage, as I compared with another favorite sellers item, and there was only $3 difference
I tagged it, and asked if it will fit my VZ LY7 Adventra last night just to confirm its the correct part,
This morning it has now increased in price to $38.95.
But wait there is more !
You can get it at a discounted price if you use a voucher code, and guess what the price is ! $31.16 with free postage.
Wish I had of taken a screen shot !
So the morel of this post, is that as soon as you tag or message them, they wack another 22% on top of the advertised price, possibly to cover postage/delivery costs.

So now you know what surge pricing is all about! It’s one of the insidious uses of the interwebs these days.

In fairness to the seller on eBay I’d be fairly confident that it will be eBay doing that, not the seller. EBay are always trying to push eBay plus monthly subscriptions and coupons to make you think your getting a bargain.

They obviously cant discount the price the seller wants for the item without dipping into their own pocket so you mark the price up by the discount and then eBay paid nothing to provide a “discount”.

The really good (bad) part is that now with internet tracking etc they can tell what you like and charge you accordingly! You like buying car parts from XYZ online shop on a regular basis? Well now we’ll make you pay more for those parts than a newcomer will because your a captive customer!

Sparesbox had there own discount last week on eBay. This week it's gone but there is a code for Members that brings the price down to $30.38.

Ebay Plus is worth getting. I resisted for yonks but am now glad I have it. I get $5 off, once a month for anything over $15 on top of other additional discounts they offer that only members get.

@J_D 2.0 Very true,
But doing this, they can also shoot themselves in the foot,
As some of my saved/favorites I deal direct, [off eBay], and so, they are doing themselves a disservice.

As I have found another seller [I have bought from before] that is $25 cheaper, but + postage for the very same item.
$13.90 + $7.50 postage.

So they won't be able milk as much profit from the buying audience.

When they make the product seem reasonably cheap and then hook in for the postage, is another scam.

US companies are real bad for that. I won't buy anything with inflated shipping prices because if the worst is to happen and you need to return the goods than you only get reimbursed for the value of the goods and not shipping.

EBay take a fairly decent cut out of your margins as a seller. Most companies that sell direct as well take this into account with their pricing so their direct website will nearly always be cheaper than eBay.

I wouldn’t touch Spares Box with a pair of rusty tongs.
I’ve bought stuff from them before when they have had the cheapest price. They seem to take a while to send your order out though.

Correct. When you order it, they don’t send it out straight away because they don’t have it. They don’t keep stock on hand. They order it from their supplier and you wait for it to be made or for it to be sent out. Then you wait while it’s sent from them to you.
