Could you please clarify what you mean by "it will often time out"?

As in you turn the key and nothing happens? You turn the key and it clicks? You turn the key and the radio/instrument cluster doesn't come on?

Could be key head starting to fail. Scan & check for any codes relating to 'Slip ring failure'.

Turn the key ,motor turns over as normal but stops after 5/10 seconds ,motor dose not start up .retry and it starts fine ,this happens about 4/5 times a week.

Have the car battery 'load tested' to ensure that it is operating at peak efficiency. If you are a member of an Auto Club (even in NZ) gat a Patrol to visit your location. Otherwise any Auto Electrician should be able to test for you.

I had a similar issue that ended up being the immobilizer as well.

In my case, the metal ball on my key wasn't making proper contact so I replaced my key and fixed the problem. However, I suggested this to others on the forum and it didn't fix the problem. I would be interested to see what Alloytec Sludge and Sidecar55 who have posted above did to fix the issue.
