i always undo them first with the weight of vehicle on them to help stop the top from turning, once loose just finger tight and do the job, same in reverse leave loose and put vehicle weight on them so they find there spot then do up firm

When I helped do mine the top was the last thing to undo. I rattled the nut off and bam the strut hit the floor, about a 1m drop just missing my Croc covered foot.

top nut holds the strut into the chassis point, second nut holds the strut bushing/spring on the strut, just undoing the top nut will allow the cup to be removed with the vehicle on the ground

Yep but I need to swap out item #12 for a lower profile nut.

Yep, that seems to be it. You can see how big the difference is between the oe but and the nyloc.

Good idea to grab a set of VF flat strut washers and replace the dome washers with them as the VF ones spread the load over the strut bush better than the VE ones do.

Yep that but is massive.
Swap it over and your done.
As was said before don't jack the car up and the weight will hold everything still.
If you like place a jack under the car but don't jack it up.
