I believe the gear boxes are the same, the difference is in the series 1 & 2 flywheels.
Starter motors are different.
Where in Brisbane are you?

The Bosch starter motor fitted to the automatics is the induced pole type with four brushes and four pole shoes with field coils.

The Delco Remy reduction gear starter motor fitted to manual transmission vehicles is the induced pole type with four brushes and four pole shoes with field coils.

So it seems apart from different brands the manual model has a reduction gear and the automatic seems not to have a reduction gear.

I think the alloy housing on the starter where the gear engages is different auto to manual starter...all have the reduction gear its the whiring noise they all make.
