VX 225,000klms a great old girl and never had a problem but now has a slight tapping noise on start ups.
What are my options, engine rebuild - how much $ , head rebuilds - how much $ , tappet and lifter renewal - how much $ .

How about a few rounds of some thinner oil through. Though what oil do you run at present?

If it lasts a few seconds, I wouldn't worry about it.
Have you checked the oil level?

Yes the oil level is spot on, we've just returned from another 1600klm trip towing a 7 x 4 box trailer and it only used 1/2 a cup of oil.

Maybe try a bottle of lifter free just before your next oil change.

Will do and thanks.
Update: 10.10pm Saturday 6th October 2012. I'm going to change the engine oil tomorrow and this afternoon I added a bottle of the Nulon Lifter Free product
and within 1/2 an hour of driving she no longer ticks when starting.
When I change the oil tomorrow I will again add a bottle as recommended by Nulon and see what a difference that makes.

On the hunt!!
Run a bottle of Lifter Free, do some k's - I wouldnt do more than 50 k's myself, then dump the oil. If there is/was a build up of gunk, it will mostlikely end up in the sump, and eventually back up top!

Just run the lifter free for a few KM's then do an oil change, no need to add another bottle after, if you do this you will have to do ANOTHER oil and filter change.

If the tick is gone then its done its job.

Yes the tick is gone but its not fixed, I've only band aid the problem, hey.

Air and oil filter just changed and also the oil but on the Nulon botton they say after changing engine oil and filter, leave the Lifter Free & Tune-Up in the engine until the next oil change.
