my 5yr old son who wanted to know what colour the car was under the black paint.. instead of taking the hard option of asking, he took the easy one involving a rock and the car door. not happy. he chose to do it the day before his 5th birthday, so no presents for him :| and if he doesn't make up for it his party will be cancelled

No, this irritates me beyond belief.

Especially while im pushing the trolley out to my car and they're trying to stop it in an attempt to somehow force me to buy their cigarettes for them

Harsh punishment for a 4 year old

he has been doing a few other silly things in the last few weeks, not damaging, just messy/stupid things. never had any problems with his behaviour when he was 2/3yrs old.

he has been warned and warned for the last few weeks when we found the other things he had done.. don't do anything else your birthday is coming, etc. my wife warned him extra yesterday as it was his birthday today, and just before they went to get my daughter from school he decided to scratch the car.

he got a present from his sister, nan, great grandma - just not us. he was wonderfully behaved for the day and powered through the list of jobs he had to do to make up for his recent behaviour..

i guess he figured we wouldn't follow through with the punishment, but we did, so hopefully he doesn't feel the need to push boundaries with us anymore.. on a side note i think my wife was more upset about him 'missing' his birthday than he was... i just wanted some cake :)

Timbo, sorry but I feel your punishment was way too harsh. Children's birthday's are very special milestones and each one should be treasured. You could have found another punishment. If I was your wife I would not have allowed this to happen. You think he isn't upset - he is just starting to build a lifetime of resentment against a cruel Father whose punishments don't fit the crime. No I am not a hippy parent, read many of my other posts about how I disciplined my children who are all adults now, but not acknowledging his 5th birthday with a gift is reprehensible.

Timbo, if I were you, I'd be getting him a present man.
He would be feeling like #### atm.

I wouldn't be surprised if your missus gets him one secretly.
