Broken valve train component?
+1 on that. something bouncing around that shouldn't be. I would be more prepared for replacing motor than repairing current one. If there is a part of a valve floating around inside a chamber it would've scratched the hell out of the bore requiring a rebuild.

How hard is it to replace the V6? I'm pretty competent on the tools and have a pretty complete workshop at home. Much to a straight swap?

Nah easy swap. One in one out. Everything plugs into the same spots. Couldn't be much easier

"Missus driving" - Well there's your problem right there. I bet she drove it totally oblivious to any high gauge readings or warnings.

Time for a replacement engine and wife.

Be fair on the missus, temp gauge wont read with no water in it. No light's come on till it **** itself. I knew the heater core was seaping, i probably shoulda checked it.

So really just unbolt from the trans and mounts, outlet manifolds and unplug loom?
And off course Aircon, hoses etc.
guess i'm interested if it's easier to pull out with tranny or unbolt from tranny.

If you remove engine by itself remember to unbolt the TC off the flex plate before removing engine if auto.

Yea, just unbolt the starter, mounts, exhaust y piece, tc, loom, air duct etc.
Unbolt the air con from the engine and tie it off out of the way.

Be easier without the trans.
