The leather shifter boot, yeah? You need to remove the trim panel that houses the mirror, window and ESP switches - it's just clipped in. Start at the forward edge of the cup holders and pop up one corner, then work your way around with your fingers, popping one clip loose at a time. When it's free, you won't be able to lift it very high, as the switches will still be connected. The cables are just clipped into the switch bodies (x3) - just press the tabs on the clips and you'll be able to disconnect the wires - you won't lose them. Then there's 4 phillips head screws holding the shifter boot's plastic mounting fame to the car - you'll obviously have to undo these - just don't lose them or all you'll score from that is a rattle. When the frame is free, you literally just grab the shift knob and pull it straight up really hard, making sure not to smack yourself in the forehead with it. Don't try to twist it though, as you could weaken the bond and actually separate the lever from the shifter mechanism - it's a two part shifter. Pulling straight up will mean only the shift knob is removed.
The boot is fastened to knob with a thin cable tie (just clip it and make sure you have a replacement) and the hem of the boot is pressed into tabs around the base of the frame. Use a trim removal tool or the corner of a vinyl squeegee - something flat and plastic to help pop the hem out of the tabs.
Fit the new boot to the knob and mounting frame, line up the knob on the shift lever and thump it down hard to secure it back in place. Then you just need to refit all the trim and switches and Robert is your mother's brother.
The boot I bought is not a cleared leather, so I UV treated it before fitting. Probably not essential, but easy enough to do.
Start to finish, you're looking at about 20 minutes if you're nursing a coffee.
