OK I've jacked up the ute with a couple of mates and got under it while running and in gear up to about 60+kph.
#@%* that takes some courage. Or stupidity to do HA HA. Don't know which. Anyway I can tick that off my bucket list.

Theres so many mechanical noises under there its really hard for me to tell. Maybe the diffs not loading up enough to be sure.
So thats decided it. She's booked into to the specialists next week.

And guys I don't recommend doing what I did. Too #%@**# dangerous; and since I did it I've heard so many stories about cars falling on people:undead: its not funny.

I'll keep you posted.

Did you use the screwdriver or just lay under the car and try listen for the noise ? just give the diff a oil change and put the adative in it has the diff oil been changed b4 ? it might not of done many kays but the oil is still old.

Used a long handled screw driver as well as a length of garden hose. Even used a doctors medical stethoscope.
Trouble was it was only making the noise under certain conditions while driving. Not while jacked up in the air with no load on it.
When you're listening there's a symphony of varying mechanical noises coming from every point you pick under there.
But nothing that stood out.

Oils and additives were correct and nice and fresh.

UPDATE The diff is now fully repaired. Had a full going over with new bearings and new ring and pinion gears.
Will put up some pics of the bits and pieces the guys pulled out and replaced.

Pic of the all parts replaced in the diff.

The three pics of the pinion gear show some fine pitting. This may?? Have caused the noise. The pinion bearings also looked a bit discoloured but nothing obviously pitted or worn.
Everything's been gone over and adjusted. I'm happy with the results. It is very quiet.

Comes with a 12 month / 20,000 km warranty.
Take it back after the first month for a free check over to make sure all is ok.

Then I'm off for a motoring holiday in the old girl!:yahoo::yahoo::yahoo::yahoo::yahoo:
