VB - VK Manuel Steering Rack

Hey guys will a VB - VK Manual steering rack bolt up to a VN V8 Kframe? I know the rack ends and intermediate shaft might be different but would the splined shaft(intermediate shaft attached to) be in the similar spot in a VN?

I don't think a vb manual steer rack will work on a vn kframe as the mounts that hold the rack to the kframe will be a different angle . Is it allowed to rego a v8 commodore that doesn't have power steering it would be **** to drive. I have never tried to do that so maybe wrong but am pretty confident it wont fit.

Different width where they bolt up & also different angle on the crossmembers...they dont interchange.

Can move mounting points,some workshops do it for ls1 conversions...although usually easier just pay the coin for matching steering rack + intermediate shaft for the crossmember being used.

Manual steering not so bad to drive,tedious to park with big wheels though.

you need to use a VL manual steering rack to bolt up to a VN a VB-VK one won't fit.

Then you have to use different length rack ends from memory, cant remember the exact details on that.

and a VL Manual rack will be hard as #### to find probally, i remember when we did a VQ back in the day and it was a prick to find one.

Can buy remanufactred vl manual racks...but intermediate shaft rare as rocking horse poo...

(wondering if they're just modded p/steer racks.)

Lots of dudes buying up early vb-k manual racks & repositioning mounts fore ls conversions so now they're hard to find also.

Hotrod guys have been buying up the early manual racks with the 440mm intermediate shafts for ages as well causing a shortage. Everything is thin on the ground these days.

They did it with all the hd/hr cross members when I wanted to play with early holdens don't get me started on the people that retired early and now sell old car parts as a hobby they don't do up or drive old cars. They stole my hobby I used to like h series holdens once now for what tossers think parts for them are worth crush the lot of them.

Anyone know where I might find a manual steering rack? Taking the power steering out of my 79 VB SL/E and having trouble sourcing one. Was thinking someone might know some wreckers in Vic that specialise in the older Commodores

They're all on ebay trying to charge 4-500...most seem to be in Vic.

The vl rack & steering links $550 was common price..no idsea if power-rack converted to manual or not.
