Your mechanic sounds like he was hoping you'd still drive it, he's probably sitting by the fone waiting for to to call to see if the tow truck can drop it off.

This happened to me recently lifter failed >ate came>engine gone ,new l98 =3300$ with 60000kms replace the broken engine.
The old engine i am rebuilding , as hardly no metal through out engine. how ever the cost would of still been 3k for parts ,cam ,lifters, blah blah ,
but 7k sounds way to high.
get it checked out if it's (just a cam) that may not be so bad ( maybe time to upgrade ? new cam?
