I recently bought from a local Holden dealer an ex Holden employee's 2008 Commodore SS with 13000 Kms on the clock. Have done 2000K's in it now and have the following issues:

The Manual Gearbox is the noisiest I have ever used. It pops and grates all the time and has jumped out of first a couple of times when pulling away gently (although this may have been caused by me not getting it in gear properly due to how tight the thing is). The thrust bearing clicks every time the clutch is released and the backlash in the drive train is shocking.

A Wheel bearing is whining at 40-60 Kmh

Ventilation system has a recirculate mode which on every other car I have owned prevents fumes from the outside getting into the cabin.....not so on the Commodore.

So, I am aware that the 6 speed box cogs are probably straighter cut than usual to handle the power of the V8, and that this would increase noise, but how noisy is normal?

Anybody else having similar problems or know anything of interest on these?

The car is in the dealers being serviced today and I have reported these issues but I am expecting the usual "they all do that sir" response. I wasnt expecting issues like this on a car with just 15000 on the clock.

Lol - you sure you don't have a demonstrator that had the crap thrashed out of it??? All of those symptoms you are experiencing smell like a very hard life. I presume you have driven other commodores of the same model to compare?

Glad it made you laugh Reaper.....but nope it is definitely a Holden employees car, not an ex demo machine. I have the docs to prove it and the transport papers from the Holden plant in Elizabeth where it's former owner worked. It has had a towbar on it before (something i failed to spot before I bought the car) which would certainly not be fitted to a demo car.

My neighbour has the exact same car with more K's on it and although the box on his is noisy, it is quieter than mine and smoother too.

Looking forward to hearing what the dealer has to say

Sounds like you got an "Ex Holden Test car" from GMH proving ground at LANG LANG- My mate just bought a SS-V Manual with 40000klm on it & its a dream to drive , no noise , smooth shifts , lovely vehicle. I assume yours has a warranty with it??? Take it back & get stuck into them!!!!! Make them replace the gearbox & fix the other bits & give you a loan car while they are doing it. Its about time these Dealers got a Reaming....

Yes mine does have a warranty.....the Holden new car warranty which is 3 years I believe (car is February 2008).

I think I got sucked into the whole "buy from a Holden Dealer" propaganda and should have realised this when they broke my car on it's pre delivery inspection (some monkey of a mechanic cracked the starter motor whilst allegedly performing a recall mod.....although I have been unable to find any product recall which would have involved the starter motor!!)

On these grounds, I am not sure that I want the dealers hammer wealding gibbons installing a new gearbox for me as they would likely just stuff something else up in the process.

Once I get the car back later today, I will locate a specialist and get another inspection for a second opinion.

As per my prediction, the service manager just rang and told me that his guys cannot find anything unusual with my car......i figured that would be the case..............i am gonna take my neighbours out this evening and find out for sure if mine is wrong or whether these things simply have agricultural gearboxes from the factory

They aren't the silky smoothest boxes in the world however they shouldn't be dropping out of gear either. Did the car exhibit any of the problems when you test drove it prior to buying it?

The car won't have been a lang lang test mule. They are not sold to the public and nearly all of them end up crushed or used in other gm programs. The problem with any used car is it's a real lottery how it was treated before you got it.

I use to own a vZ maloo and i would have the same problem in 1st gear. I dont think you are putting it into gear proplerly. I needed to be firm when i put it into 1st gear. The gearbox was noisier than other manual cars. Other than that i found it to be pretty good
