Have a VE 6lt Calais. Have an intermittent fault with the temp gauge. Some times it will operate normally, other times it stays at the bottom, idle speed remains high, climate control doesnt operate, then suddenly the gauge will rise, idle speed drops, climate starts to work, this can be after a couple of minutes or after 20/30 or more Ks. Any one had experience this with the 6lt?

Thanks for the quick reply, I don't think its thermostat as I have seen it rise then suddenly fall again, was thinking maybe temp sender!

if the thermostat is sticking/stuck open then the gauge wont read much as the coolant is free flowing through the system not allowing it to reach temp properly, then as you have driven along (only few minutes maybe it springs free so to speak it starts to operate properly) you will get the sudden rise in the gauge if the stat suddenly closes a bit whilst driving (obviously you wont see it), temp sender possible, now that extends to connection possibilities, you may need to check and clean these, just throwing it out there

Check and top up coolant level first thing in the morning with the engine cold. Any air in the system can cause this. Second step would be temp sensor as suggested.

the temp sender does the ecu then the gauge could be why u have a few issues, the coolant temp senders are quite cheap so id start there...

I had something like this caused by faulty cap on coolant bottle. Temp would rise then suddenly drop. It was hard to believe that a faulty cap could do that. Give it a go.
