VH SL/E Head Unit

I am wondering how you remove the orginal tape/radio unit from a VH SL/E, and if anyone could recommend a good unit that will pretty much go straight in.

Also, if anyone knows how to get the front speaker covers off on the dash that would be fantastic.

i have an sl/x but i assume its similar? from memory i had to unscrew the knobs to be able to slip the black face off and then i could get the actual unit out as well. was confusing for a while but once i realised it was easy as. maybe it is similar to this, but mine was only a radio. hope it helped. failing that check a workshop manual.

Yes it is similar to the SL/X - your method is correct.
