Hello all,

Just wondering if you have any recommendations for who to take a VK auto transmission to for repairs and potentially a rebuild.

I am on the North side of Brisbane and the car is driveable, but do not want to take it too far just in case.

Manually changes ok - but struggles kicking down from 3rd to 2nd and struggles changing up from 2nd to 3rd. Lots of clunking happening in first/reverse as well. Local mechanics did a service but couldn't fix anything and commented that after the service and rechecking it all, when taking the pan off the new fluid had a gray tinge - so obviously some wear happening in the transmission.

Appreciate any thoughts.

Thanks
Jeff

Thanks for that.
Basically what you say describes it grey crud on the pan floor. The fluid is generally proper colour and looks clear.
They did say when they first took the pan off there seemed to be some fine metal filings in the bottom of it (didn't actually say in what location and didn't think to ask at the time, but no sign of that now.

I will have a chat to a couple of the auto trans places and get a "feel" for it from what they are saying.
I have a ball park figure for a rebuild, so have an idea what they may be!

To be fair to the mechanics I took it to in the first case...I don't think they were even born when this transmission was first running around the road.

Cheers

Good question, don't know the answer.
Will see if I can find out. Thanks for the tip.

I had my Trimatic rebuilt about 7 years ago and cost $1,700. Yes you will need to take it to a transmission specialist that is not only familiar with old tech but also HAPPY to work on them; ask this question and confirm with them before you commit to their service.

Good advice, thanks. I have found a guy who fits your description. A little bit of extra travel involved, but I think I might get him to have a look at it.

Cheers

Trust me it is well worth the extra travel to find the right mechanic; I have had way too many 'mechanics' stuff the job up because they have never even seen a car with a carby and no ECU let alone worked on one. Almost all of them say 'oh yeah sure, bring it in' but when it comes down to it they have no idea what they are doing and end up doing most the work via youtube, stuffing it up and charging a small fortune in the process... I would do most of the work myself if I had the time, equipment and space but sadly I do not so need to rely on mechanics and the like.
