G'day everybody.

I am in the final stages (car is running but rough) of fitting the factory EFI system to my VK black 3.3 station wagon. It is the factory black 3.3 engine but it had a varajet and EST (electronic spark timing????) and 4 speed box.

Presently the engine is difficult to start when cold. Then it will either idle high (1100rpm) or idle at anywhere between this or lower depending on its mood. Roughly after 10 to 15 minutes of driving the idle begins to lower to a point where the car will stall at the lights.

When under load/driving/accelerating the car pings/detonates from 3000 rpm to 4200/4500 rpm and once past that keeps going perfectly.

Checked the timing and it was somewhat advanced...The timing mark on the pulley was nowhere near the engine block marks. Brought the timing mark back to TDC and that was no good either so moved it to the second mark on the engine block

I have had the engine rebuilt (standard bore) before the conversion with a cam to suit the EFI. I am using the factory snorkel with an air pod, aftermarket extractors, 2.5" exhaust pipe with one muffler, fitted VR wagon tank with new internal and external pumps, new inline filter, cleaned inline fuel suppressors, new coil, new alternator, new rubber hoses (fuel, air, water) new belts, air-con pump fitted but not working, no power steer, factory tappet cover, new throttle cable, new bosch spark plugs.
I am on my second AFM that has brought some improvement, awaiting on rebuilt black motor electronic distributor to fit to rule that out.

All positive suggestions will be appreciated. Also looking for someone that has solid experience with working on this EFI system and I am willing to drive to a mechanic shop/EFI specialist with recommendations.

Cheers,

Nich.

Do the fuel pumps have higher flow/pressure than the original EFI pumps? Got the plugs gapped properly and new leads? Have you cracked the ECU open to see if there's any noticable deterioration inside?

I purchased the external pump from Bursons (local parts shop) and told them it was for a VK EFI set up. The auto electrician replaced the internal pump.
Plugs have been gapped.
New leads fitted 2 years ago.
I have not looked at the interior of the ECU. I did not know it could be opened for visual inspection.
