Tried starting car on petrol (is dual fuel) with a near flat battery, it started, then had a big backfire. Have tried to start again, with a fully charged battery, but doesnt want to run. Fires intermittently but will not run. Looking for ideas. Dont have any scanners or other such test equipment. Cheers

check the black air intake pipe, if its backfired badly I'm sure its shredded the **** outta it, pretty common on dual fuel cars.

It will crank and kinda fire but wont start if its shredded.

pretty common on dual fuel cars.
Even more common on engines with waste spark ignition (double ended coils).
If a cylinder misfires on the compression stroke then one full turn later it has a live load of gas + air pumping out the exhaust valve right when the next (waste) spark occurs. Cylinder lights up and then the inlet valve opens and lets the flame enter the inlet manifold...
Not so much of a problem on an EFI engine running on petrol because only plain air is in the inlet manifold.
Mostly not a problem on a distributor ignition because of no spark near the top of the exhaust stroke, only near top of compression.

fitted with an IMPCO style mixer or mixer ring ??

impco mixer can blow the diaprgham or crack the mixer plate and this can stop the mixer from opening and closing with incoming air and stop the engine from running gas and petrol . check the rubber intake behind the mixer for any splits or leaks ....
