Hi there,

I have just finished an engine swap in my ss but I have a code 43 appearing relating to knock sensor.

I have swapped the knock sensor from my original engine and it is connected.

The engine comes on after driving for 5 or so minutes.

From what I can find out the wire to the sensor has 5 volts to it.

Can anyone confirm this?

Also is there a way I can test the actual sensor?

Looking forward to your answers

Thanks again

Are you running the knock sensor with the proper HSV tune/memcal with knock filter fitted?

The standard SS doesn't have the wiring in the loom for the knock sensor, this was only fitted in HSV models as far as I'm aware.

yep the car was a hsv enhanced and has the wiring to the rhs of block.

The ecu has the retrofitted by hsv sticker on it

The memcal has the knock board also

I was hoping somewhere someone may have a diagnosis procedure for that circuit

This new block doesn't have a different cam in it by chance? Not a roller block from a VT or VSIII or anything?

You may need an ALDL cable to see what the knock sensor is putting out as a signal.

Auto or manual? Never mind, I'll give you both, haven't looked to see if there are any differences !!! ECM is for manual, PCM is forauto.

Awesome,

Exactly what I was hoping for. Its factory manual by the way.

The engine I have now fitted history is unknown other than it come from a vs hsv enhanced statesman.

It has a hydraulic flat tappet camshaft and has been rebuilt at some stage

Unknown camshaft fitted but runs well. Its a bit of a pig to start also but once running runs really well.

I have another vr v8 here so ill check some sensor readings between them both. Once hot starts well so hoping just a coolant temp sensor

No code stored for that though.

Ill get testing on this circuit tomorrow and let you know how things go.

Cheers for the help BlackVXGTS

Thing about the 304 knock sensor is that it's not very good, it was kinda fitted as a bit of an afterthought to a block that was 30 years old at the time.

If the cam is big enough it will throw knock sensor errors, to the point where a tune won't compensate and the tuner will just unplug it, but again that depends on its size.

Wouldn't surprise me if that was the case using a stock tune with a bigger cam. Not sure how to narrow the problem down to cam size though.

Simplest test would be to tap the engine block with a hammer, if the rpm/behaviour changes then the knock sensor is working.

The cam fitted wouldn't be much bigger than standard so I didn't expect that to be an issue.

I got back underneath to check supply voltage to the sensor and noticed the pin was quite set back in the connector.

I gave the terminal a push from behind and it probably moved 5 or so mm then clicked back into position

I havnt been able to go for a good drive as yet but I expect that will be the issue.

Thanks all for your input, Very much appreciated.
