VR SS
Hi Guys

My VR SS has been running cold for a while. The needle does not move from cold unless the weather is warm and im sitting at lights. Then it will only move to one bar from cold. As soon as I start moving again it will return to cold. I have replaced the thermostat twice and still no improvement.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Thanks

I would start by feeling the hoses to see if the engine is actually cold or a faulty sender or guage. Air in the system or low coolant level can also make the guage read cold.

Mine stays pretty close to cold with my CAI but if i go on a long drive say 1 hour going 100 - 120 constant it will goto 1/4 max. I also always have the aircon running though.

My bet is on a faulty temp sensor.
replace that and i think u'll find that the guage shows differrent.

try that, but my vr commodore was like that, but now its starting to get warmer, the temp is goin up, ive got a new sensor but there was no dif it was the same as before, im not really worried.

The hotest mine has ever got was just below half way tho and that was idling at traffic lights in middle of day.

but as you move, more air flow so it will get cooler

I recently had this problem too, and discovered that my head gasket was buggered... expensive repair bill... Be careful and get it diagnosed early, as mine was rooted... Do not take the thermostat out, but rather go to your mechanics and check every possible scenario.

I have the opposite problem. The radiator fan doesnt go until too late, as im sure the radiator coolant starts to boil before the fan comes on.
Are the thermostats expensive to replace?
If you look at a Haynes manual it will tell you the steps to identifying a fault in the cooling system. Do you have a haynes manual? if not let me know and i will type out in full

I'd be replacing the thermostat first, easy and cheap.
