I'd be replacing the thermostat first, easy and cheap.

Having huge temperature difference between water and oil/ combustion chambers only puts added stress on all parts.

Thanks for all the help with this. However I still havent been able to solve the problem. I have run the error code test with a paperclip and have come up with error code 12. If there was something seriously wrong would a different code be displayed?

Yeah MJohns code 12 is A OK so nothing wrong there.
