Hey guys,

As it's been getting colder here in NZ I've started to use my heaters (98 VT Acclaim), but everytime I adjust the temperature dial thingy from cold to warm/hot, it starts smelling like curry (coolant smell) and I've noticed a faint mist coming through the vents - which causes my windscreen to fog up instantly (after I have just managed to defog it with the cold blowers running full bore). So I decided to flush the cooling system the other day (was mostly mud water), but this didn't help at all.

My A/C does sweet nothing either so I'm guessing that needs to be re-gassed? And the coolant smell - is that the heater core on its way out?

Also I've noticed my windscreen has 'runs' down it - ie as if someone's spray something on (like glass cleaner) and let it run down and dry up, without wiping it off. Except the problem is I've tried cleaning it both inside and out and these marks will not budge, at all. They won't even smudge or anything. Sometimes it looks like they're gone, but then when the windscreen fogs up you can clearly see them, and they will not go away.

Any help guys? cheers!
Sam

It sure sounds like a leaking heater core to me.

Definitely the heater core. I did mine myself in a day so if you need any info let me know.

Heater core

http://forums.justcommodores.com.au...-heater-core-removal-hoses-photos-thread.html

Sorry, but is a big job. I have to replace my heaterbox (drivers side damaged) so im in the same boat but mine is not urgent.

You need a heater core, new coolant, and some patience as its a big job

I lack this. Actually I lack all 3 but the first 2 are easy to get.

How can I by pass it instead? And if I bypass the heater core, will my aircon still work (if I get it re-gassed)?

cheers guys

You can by-pass the heater by joining the 2 hoses that go from the engine to the heater tap with a suitable joiner. Your A/C will still work but only on cold of course.

These are the two hoses coming out the side of the water pump correct?

And would it be a good idea to flush the heater core out with clean water?
