VT rear left exhaust manifold stud broken, remove with easy out tool or don't attempt
Just like my VX did my VT has broken the rear left exhaust manifold stud where it connects into the cylinder head, fortunately it is easy to access and I have a special little Bosch drill which will fit in there, I also have an easy out kit but I am worried that the drill bit will either break off or even worse the hardened easy out tool, holden wants about $300 to get the stud out and replace it.
Does anyone have any experience with getting these studs out? I know they are a common problem but only the rear ones break (manifold flexing between hot and cold I think is what causes it and routine tightening apparently helps prevent it) The studs have an anti-sieze compound on the threads which is supposed to prevent the stud becoming 'welded' or rusted in place.
I have removed broken studs in the past using a centre punch, small sharp drill bit and an easy out, but on motor cycle engines where access is easier.
The easy out screw extractor kit is made by Sutton Tools pty ltd and covers sizes from 1/8th to 7/8th (no.1 to no.6) I have been told to use a good brand
of easy out, not a cheap one and apparently Sutton Tools is quite good.
Alternatively I could fork out the $300 and have Holden do it (I think they use a contractor who specialises in bolt/stud removal from cylinder heads.
