Have you tried changing the relay in the fuse panel?

It could be a bad earth I suppose. Try cleaning the battery terminals and clamps and check earth cables, also check the cable from the starter motor to the battery. Make sure the cables have a good clean connection.

Thanks for your help mate, anyone else got any ideas?.
This is my wifes car and she now tells me that a few weeks ago it started to play up,she would turn the key and nothing would happen but on the second try it would start.

I was thinking that it might be the ignition switch not making good contact when it turns.
You say that you get a clicking sound when you try to start it, is that right?

Needs a new starter motor mate. My WH ls1 was doing the exact same thing, It got progressively worse until it started to require twenty plus turns of the key to kick it over. Got a new starter, now it starts first time every time :)
