Thanks for that info mate, least I know now that it does seem to have some sort of trend with the VX models in manual. I'll be taking it in to a gearbox specialist to have a look at and see if there is anything that can be replaced to stop the noise completely. Might be a bit $$$$ pricey but as you said I might put in a high performance clutch and fly wheel in myself depending on what gets found.

Keep me up updated on your car aswel if you could.

Cheers

Why not try and take it for a test drive with a Holden mechanic.. Then they can hear the sound and can't deny a problem is there..

A mechanic there might be a bit more forthcoming then a service advisor.. Just a possiblity.

Yeah given this a try a few weeks back now, but the noise wasnt as audible as I wanted it to be at the time. It's 6 month service is due in about 3 weeks and let them know that Im still having the ongoing problem. Ive been told this time that I should have the Service Manager looking at with me when I take it to them in the morning for a drive test.

Bit of an old thread, but finally taking it to a trusted mechanic on Thursday night
and get him to take a closer look at it......Universal Joints, Centre Bearing, Diff,
etc ...and see what he comes up with.

ok, my mate is a holden mechanic, my car does the same thing, i had it on his hoist at the holden workshop to look at this problem.

do this...

pull the hand break on, and leave the car in neuteral and climb under it, (park it on a curb or something.) then grab the tailshaft and see if it has any twist play in it. if it does, and i almost gaurentee it will. see where the play is, could be in the diff, the CV joints or the unis near the hubs. HOLDEN say that 5mm of movement is acceptable, 6mm is excessive. however it wont matter if u have a heap. my car prolly has 5 or more mm, so ill wait till it breaks before it replace the CVs

Well after a quick look under the car tonight, my mechanic looks as if he may have
pinned the noise location already. The elbow connection on the driveline has
alot of play in it, and by physically turning on the driveline he was able to create
the noise perfectly. It rattles like crazy......hes seen them with this sort of play
in them before, but never making this noise.

Taking it back Monday for him to rip it out and look around a bit more.

I guess that would be how I describe it.....but the middle universal joint connecting
both pieces together, I got under the car and had a look myself, its like its hollow or
something.......the noise is deffinately not comin from the diff....

The VX series have a unijoint joining the two tailshaft halves together, whereas the previous models had cv joints.

Also, they stacked the bearing caps to the yoke, instead of using snap rings ... this makes it less ideal.

Here is pic of mine .... you can see the bearing cap popping up!

Not too sure what you are tryin to explain to me ac2001au???

Anyway took it to my mechanic this morning, took out the drive shaft and found alot
of noise and alot of play in the slip yoke. No noise found in the diff, the transmission
and the rubber dampners at either end were in good nick.

Took it around to a driveline specialist and they suspect the same thing. They pulled back the
rubber sleeving on the yoke and it was bone dry. Put some grease on the
yoke and it got rid of most of the free play noise.

Put the driveline back in the car, but the clunk noise still exists. Next step is now
to go down to my holden dealer this arvo and let em look at it with the details ive
found, and see if they will replace the drive shaft under warranty, or I will have
to go with the reconditioning from the driveline people.
