VX Commodore the poor thing
GDay all

Long time lurker, first time poster!
Over the last few years this forum has been great for fixing my car, so thank you!

Picked up a replacement starter motor for my 2001 VX V6 today, remove the old one and got the new one in nicely.

Today i also replaced the battery, battery terminals, leads and plugs.

Only problem, car wont start! Just sounds like a tommy gun firing.

Im thinking the problem may be the starter motor teeth not meshing with ring gear. Does this seem likely?
Car is auto, done 180k

Cheers!

That " tommy gun" sound usually represents Insuffient power..... If it was not meshing correctly it makes an absolutely horrible noise! I would start by cleaning the terminals making sure they are nice clean and tight, check all your earths, and makes sure you remembered to put the little plug for the solenoid (on the starter) back on its a spade connector

Cheers Bowen, gone thru everything, im thinking it may be the spade connector on the solenoid as it is a bit loose.
Ill get a new one tomorrow and try it out when nice and tight

Battery's love to fail during winter, get a new one to suit starting with the air conditioner on.

Well i got the spade connector nice and tight, tommy gun noise has stopped, and now the car just goes clunk each time i try to start
Im guessing thats a sign of a seized motor?

Given you've been cranking the battery with no recharge being provided by the alternator you may just have flattened the battery below starting ability.
