Vz crewman
HI all.
Just purchased a VZ crewman ute. Fuel Gauge comes from full to empty in about 250km but only takes 30-35 litres to fill to full again ( which is about half a tank).
Calibration or fuel sender issue?
Also Crewman tank is shaped like a saddle bag straddling the tailshaft. There appears to me no hoses low down allowing fuel to balance between the 2 halfs. As the fuel pump/sender is one assembly and sit in one side how does the fuel level balance out between the 2 halfs of the tank either side of the tailshaft ? Is there a hose that may be blocked.
Holden are asking nearly $800 to access and replace sender ( need to drop the tank) so would like to do a bity of investigation first in case simply a calibration issue or a simple blocked transfer hose between 2 tanks.
Thanks in advance for any assistance

Older post but just in case someone else comes across this issue.

Been having fuel issues as well. You don't need take the tray off just slide it back. Although no tray is much easier to work on.

There is a hose that goes over the arch in the tank that comes off the bottom of the fuel pump, inside the small plastic bit on the side of the fuel pump where this hose should be is an O ring, if that is cracked then it stops the fuel been sucked into the pump from the passenger side of the tank. Otherwise the hose could be missing. All the hose in the tank are heat fitted, so if you decide to pull them off you'll need to clamp them when you put them back on otherwise you'll be popping hoses off every other day.

I’ve disassembled a fuel pump on a Crewman and found no need to to cut or remove the hoses that are heat fitted. Anything that is like that is attached to a fitting that is designed to be removed.

If any of those lines are ever cut or removed from the fitting, no amount of clamping is going to seal them.

Both the lines and the fittings can be purchased to replace damaged ones. These lines are used on just about every car made in the last 30 years.

You can slide the tray back to access the fuel pump, however with a bit more work, you can move it back more and remove the tank in order to give it a clean and you can bet it needs it. Nice new pump is going to get clogged up screens and filters pretty quick when you see what’s on the bottom of the tank.

Looking for new a new tank meant I’ve seen enough of them to know they are full of grot and seeing what was in my damaged tank was a wake up call to clean them.

That’s going to be a whole bunch of causes together rather than a single thing playing up.

I replaced the whole thing assembly. Hardest part is cracking the locking ring, especially if it's been sitting there for a while. Only thing to watch out for... My fuel gauge started to play up again after a few months. Still got 600k from a tank, just the reading was inaccurate. Should be a simple fix of recalibration with a tech2.

So do you think best idea is to slide tub back, remove tank completely, clean out and replace with new fuel pump assembly? im trying to find correct part number for fuel pump, because prices range from $150 - $600 for pump

This is the one I got. I try to go as genuine as I can, and also like to avoid eBay as much as possible, but couldn't find pumps for a reonable price anywhere else. As noted above, after a few months the level sensor started to play up. Spoke to a Holden specialised wrecker and he said it just needs a calibration with the tech2. Next thing on my list to do, been busy moving. But it fixed the 35l/tank issue.

Quick question. Need to get into the tank again, but the lock ring tool I bought previously was a pain. I only got it to work through perseverance and desperation, and broke all my good tools in the process. Do you have a link to the tool you used for the lock ring. I bought an "adjustable" one from eBay and it worked for when I needed, but didnt line up properly.

I used a large flat blade screw driver covered in a rag. Knocked it with a hammer.
