Go for a VY.

If you can find a series II VY (the last ones made) even better. Holden seemed to have sorted them out pretty well by then.

If service costs are a factor...Go VY... the air, oil and fuel filters cost less too!

ive ive owned a 2000 magna and my best mates missus had a v6 camry, i dont no which car u have driven but those arnt gud motors, mine blew oil and coolant smoke evry time off the lights( had only done 140000 kays) and that was typical with alot of magnas at that age as well as paint fade, **** headining.
a commodore or falcon any infact i think is a better car then any magna or camry of that age.

yes i totally agree that a commodore or falcon are better cars than magnas or camrys. i've driven magnas and camrys and its not a particularly enjoyable task lol. i wasn't talking about the cars overall, but their engines. i've done a bit of driving of a 97 magna 3.0 V6 with over 220,000km and in my opinion it is more responsive, smoother and i just like the engine better than the alloytec. that one doesn't blow smoke and runs perfectly, although i have seen other magnas of that era blowing smoke too. i'd rather a commodore overall though!! the way a magna drives with awful torque steer, vague steering, cheap build quality, rubbish turning circle, blah blah blah... i dont really like them, but engine is okay.

Just look at the toyota aurion V6. that is a brilliant engine! I drove all up the north west coast of tassie in a hire car aurion. good car apart from a few little annoying things, but i'd still prefer a commodore. but... the engine... just brilliant! if only holden turned one of those toyota V6's around for RWD and plonked it in a commodore!

even a mitsubishi 380 V6 with only sohc per bank is far superior to an alloytec, and a heck of a lot quicker.

but anyway, back on topic a bit.. VY ecotec versus VZ alloytec... well much of a muchness really. i personally like the old ecotec cos i just like driving it better. feels gruntier in normal driving conditions, more responsive. VZ is probably technically a better engine, but it lacks any real advantage over the old one in real world terms, and isn't as good to drive. hard to explain. i'm not bagging out VZ owners here. VY's and VZ's are good cars, but in my opinion, for that era its a bit dissapointing that holden weren't up to matching the competition (ford, toyota, mitsubishi) for engine goodness.

thats all only my opinion from my experience with these various cars/engines. anyone is quite welcome to have a different opinion than mine.

yeah i gota agre with everyday driving thing, me old man has a vx/wh? stato, it needs the lower end grunt the ecotecs have that the alloytec doesnt.

my dad has the 190 sv6 and it does ride nice and smooth and look good however, it doesnt have much down low and sounds weird when reving (its manual too) another thing is his exhuast sounds like a wet fart, much prefer the good old ecotec

I haven't owned either a VY or VZ, but i've done a decent amount of driving in a VY, and also driven a VZ. I was quite dissapointed with the VZ alloytec. I was expecting it to be much better. In my opinion the alloytec in the VZ is a "downgrade" on the old ecotec VY. That might sound strange but let me explain.

The VY was much more responsive off the line, where as the VZ you need to rev the nuts off it to make it move. That wouldn't be such a downer if it sounded nice, but the alloytec sounds more like my mum's 30 year old sewing machine than a sweet revving V6. (eg: any toyota V6 of the last 20 years or even late 90's magna V6's :rofl: are far superior to the alloytec IMO!).

The VZ alloytec has a fairly even torque spread. It makes close to its peak torque in a lot of the rev range which should be a good thing. But the feeling I got after stepping out of a VZ, this translates to - gutless everywhere.

I wouldn't say the old VY ecotec is a "superior motor" to the alloytec, because its really not. Its a bit of an old dunger really, but it does the job quite well and feels less gutless and more responsive than the alloytec. The downside of the ecotec is that its a pretty harsh motor at high revs. eg: it sounds like a conrod and pistion could come through the sump any second above of 5,000rpm, but if you don't thrash it then its not really a problem. But even still, the VZ alloytec isn't a smooth revving motor either. It is smoother than the ectotec, but still a harsh revving motor by todays standards.

So in conclusion, the VY gets my vote. It sounds better, is more responsive at low revs, uses about the same amount of fuel as the alloytec anyway, and isn't any slower. Just better to drive really lol. I may be slightly biased because I had a VS ecotec for a couple of years which was a good car, but I'm sure there'll be some VZ owners who are biased towards VZ's too, and there's nothing wrong with that either. Drive both and see which you prefer.

Wow that was a ramble and a half! I do that when i'm tired haha. Hopefully that gives you something to think about anyway.

My thoughts are exactly the same. Unless you're on a race track, the ecotec is better.
