With GM automatic transmissions...The name of the box tells you everything you need.

The 5 speed is a 5L40-e

5 being the number of gears, L means its designed for longitudinal configuration (RWD) 40 basically designates the boxes STRENGTH or GVWR rating and the e stands for electronic.

A GVWR of 40 is quite low, the 4 speed auto is a 4L60-e which means it has a higher GVWR rating and hence is stronger. The one toners use a 4L65-e so stronger again.

Most people go straight to the TH400 which is a 4L80 and it is renowned for its strength.

According to its GVWR rating (40) it is able to handle vehicles up to 4000lb which is 1814kg and it is designed for 1.8–3.6 L engines with a maximum of 250 ft·lbf (340 N·m) of torque. As previously mentioned by yourself in this thread.

As you can see, in stock guise it is already being pushed to its limits as the alloytec 190 is sitting on 340nm stock.

CAPA is full of **** if they say it will handle 19psi... Although it might, for about a month :p

Get a second opinion from a transmission specialist and see what they say. The 5 speed auto is not a box built to handle power.

wouldn't the th400 be called a 3l80? because it is a 3 speed?

and as far as power figures, undecided. i have been told that once built the bottom end should be good for the 1000hp region, realistically though i will be aiming quite a bit lower to start with, keeping streetability and reliability in mind!

Technically yeah, original name is the TH400/3L80 but as of 1991 its a 4L80 as its a 4 speed. They added an overdrive gear to it in 1991. The only vehicle that still uses the 3 speed version is the Humvee's in the US Army... The H1 however uses the 4L80.

Other cars that have used the 2 include Bentley, Ferrari, Rolls Royce and Jeep.
