Id go for an older toyota camry ('89 '92 model) or the Holden Apollo equivalent. so they're not the best cars, but their cheap to run and keep on going.

I know not many Holden lovers like myself would say this but i think the only answer is to buy an Escort. Either a 1.6 or the Cosworth powered 2ltr. What ever you do, don;t get a FWD, u will be bored with it as quick as. Have a good look around because you may be able to find a granma escort that only gets driven on sundays.

Definately a good idea get a v6 commie on gas and i reckon ya wont look back, though if ya really wanna cheap runabout i used to run a 993cc 3pot suzi swift and i could get down to 4.5 L per 100 km on the highway, sitting on about 95 to 100 though it did do 110 easily, its actually to only car ive been booked for speeding in and that was for 124kph in a 110kph zone :bop: (ive settled down a bit since then), they actually handle quite well too with IRS, it out does my lancer for gravel roads, and i suppose the 1.3L 4pot version should be pretty good too (also as a barina so you don't have a rice badge if you like)

Go the older Escorts!!!

Personally I reckon the choice would be an RS2000 copy (good luck finding an original one...) and whack a five speed of some sort behind the 2 liter donk. Bit of head work for unleaded maybe, but a very light fun car with decent amounts of room and by jeez do they go!
Better looks than Jap small cars of the era as well.

Yeah the 1985-89 Corollas are excellent cars. My mate had an '88 Corolla Seca CS-X Twin Cam (100kW motor, no kidding) 5-speed and it went like the power of piss.

Yer i was thinking something like a telstar or something along those lines.
Just something to get me around for about 6 monmths or so.

DON'T DO IT :w00t:
i can give you a hundred reasons not to get one of those.
i've had one before & the fuel economy on that was much worse than a commodore even after i put a new motor & carby etc in it
around 300 ks out of a 60 litre tank :bang:

much better to get a corolla or pulsar or something like that
my daughter has a 87 pulsar which only cost around $2500.
its turned out to be a very reliable/economical car

Pajero LWB Wagon, Power/economy what's that ???
Do's and Don'ts

Was going to post identical details to Greengopher but I don't need to now.
Telstar/626 are very heavy on fuel. If you want a car just for fuel economy you really have to find out reasonably accurate consumption figures.
Most carbed fours that would be in the ballpark, price wise, at best will use only 15% less fuel if you have a V6 or 25% if you have a V8. Hardly worth it given the reliability of the unstressed Commo motor.
The exceptions would be the Barina/Swift or Charade but the fours only.
In these cars the 4cyl has almost identical economy to the 3cyls and in the Charade the 4cyl is just shy of double the power - 66kw to 37kw.
The Charade gets along very well 0 - 100 in 9.5seconds, excellent handling and close to 50mpg (I used to own one).
The only other cars that have lower than average consumption in their class is the old 1.5 or 1.6 Astra/Pulsar. Up to 45mpg, very cheap but also very flimsy. Do not get an Alfa as $1500 would be your monthly bill just keep it going and to stop it falling apart.
The best idea would be gas. I run gas on my VN and for $25.00 I get 440 - 480km. With petrol at $1.30 it is the monetary equivalent of getting 70 - 75mpg (=26km/l or 3.85L/100km if same distance travelled on $25.00 petrol).
No four will give anywhere near that. Then again, you could buy a four on gas.
