What are all the ve engines and what are the ones to avoid

And then for the final 4 years, holden stayed with the same LFX engine on the vf

After trialling about 6 different engines on the VE :)

LF1, LFX and LWR (LPG 3.6) though the last engine was dropped for the series 2 update...

They had no incentive to put an upgraded engine in the VF for the last four years as GM had already decided to pull the pin on Holden.
