If you start working a full time job at 18, being self sufficient isn't all that hard..
If you're at full time Uni and work a couple of hours in a non-serious job, then it's nearly impossible to be fully self sufficient, without some kind of assistance.
The more time you spend working , the less time you spend on Uni. Uni is the full time thing after all..
A distinction has to be made. Like if people go out and get a job after they finish their VCE/HSC/Year12, that's one thing. Studying at Uni fulltime is a completely different one..
agree fully with you. i worked for 12 months after highschool, and was self sufficient for about a year, then the savings dried up. i got a job, then the grades dried up. quit the job, grades are slowly improving.
i was lucky enough to be given an old commodore by family friends. it was old, it was crap, but i looked after for 5 years until it got pulled of the road. i wasn't prepared for the loss of the car and mum and dad ended up buying a second car for the family. while i pay for a lot of the costs, they sometimes cover it. it is generally referred to as my car, but ultimately, it is the family's car, i just happen to drive it the most, and use it for driving my sister around.
give the boy a loan, but not a big one. you don't need a nice car forr your first one. if a rough car is all you can afford, take it!!!
