Sabine Moreau, 67, set off on the 60km trip to pick up a friend from the Belgian capital Brussels but ended up crossing five borders before winding up in Croatia two days later.
"I saw all kinds of traffic pass. First in French, then in Germany - Cologne, Aachen, Frankfurt ... but I asked myself no questions," she said.
An elderly Belgian woman said she was "distracted" when she drove over 1200km to the Croatian capital Zagreb despite entering an address less than 60km away into her GPS
"I was just distracted, so I kept my foot down."
Ms Moreau's son reported her missing and police were on the verge of launching a large scale manhunt when she phoned him from Zagreb.
The 67-year-old said she never questioned the directions she was given despite having to make a number of stops for petrol and a power nap on the side of the road.
She said her story sounded "weird" but she was "distracted and preoccupied".
A Belgian police spokesman has described Ms Moreau's story as "incredible".
"These GPS systems cause problems from time to time but nothing like this," he said.
"But this woman has done nothing wrong and we just have to believe her."
