Hello all,

Not sure if I have asked this but......how do you tell when to get a new battery? Not sure how old mine is in the VX. It has a little difficulty starting on cold mornings, and if a light is left on goes flat very quickly (eg. 15-20 min).

Had to get an NRMA jumpstart today; patrolman reckons the battery could benefit from a deep charge.

Thoughts?

Sounds like your close to needing one, but go down to the local supercheap/autobarn/repco and get them to a battery test for you. Should tell you if you need a newie or not.

If the battery is on it's last legs, a deep charge will do Jack **** to the battery

If you have a volt meter you can do it your self.
You have already determined that the discharge rate is high, by leaving the light on.
Start the car and measure the voltage across the terminals (14.2 or so volts).
If you can, charge the battery out side the car and do the same discharge cycle you did by leaving the lights on.
See if it makes a difference.

Those places will say the battery's stuffed any way, just to sell you a new one.

age of battery?

If it's just a regular battery with a lower CCA rating - get rid of it now, especially if over 2 years old.

If it's got a higher rating and is a 13 plate battery, consider the deep charge if it's less than 2 years old.

When replacing most higher CCA with 13 plate batteries are worth your time - a battery should be able to sit for at the very least a month and still start your car easily.

What lout said, for the bucks vs. years new battery all the way, something decent. I grabbed a century ultra from supercheap on sale for $150. Amazing difference. Icy morning insta-start.

Id say you're battery is already pretty knackered. Don't get an AC Delco because someones car starts first time everytime. For a 12 month old battery. It should. Go with a trusted brand and matches your car.

Century are great for Reserve Current, autobarns main brand is fantastic for actual tested CCA everyone's I check one of theirs it's always putting out a good 10-15% extra for CCA.
