It could just be a idler or tensioner pulley issue.
Is it worse when the AC is on or when turning the steering wheel?

You could try to remove the accessories belt and run the engine for a short period of time (do it cold, as you won't have the water pump anymore) and see if the noise goes away.

It does not come on as soon as I turn the engine on but pulled up at lights I can hear it at idle.

Could it be the wheel bearings? I am having the same problem. It sounds like a squall of wind when i accelerate. only up to 50 kph. no metal rattle sounds

Thanks for that but no, I hear it at idle at lights and so forth

I dont think its the timing chain, they make a more clunk Metal rubbing on Plastic sound not really a whining noise. My car, before I got my chains done, didnt make a noise at all. It makes more noise now, after I got the chains done lol.

The whirring noise isnt coming through the speakers are they?
I have a faint winding noise, I dont hear it if the windows down. I think is related to my gearbox, hoping a service will help.

That sound like good news.

Thanks, if its not the timing chain then I spose the idler pully becomes a good suspect.
