Hi all,
as of next Thursday this will be my Stereo set-up in my car, i have a standard VZ SV6 Alternator (been replaced but is the same output as the original (not sure exactly what the output is though)) but will this set-up be harmful and too draining on the car?

ALL MAX OUTPUTS;
HEADUNIT: Kenwood 2-Din DVD Player
FRONT SPEAKERS: JVC CS-VS607 6inch Component - 300w 60RMS
PARCEL SHELF: Kenwood 3-way 6x9s - 350w 60RMS
SUBWOOFERS: Kicker 10DCVR122 Dual 12" - 1600w Power 800RMS at 2ohms
SPEAKER AMP: JVC KS-AX3104 4 Channel - 800w 60RMSx4
SUB AMP: Kenwood KAC-9105D - 1800w 900RMSx1 at 2ohms

total speaker Watts = 2250w and 920RMS
Total Amp Watts = 2600w and 1140RMS

if i do need a new Alternator, what am i looking at for price/power wise and anything product wise as i'm not that good with Engine components.

thanks in advance
Nathan.

No you will not need to upgrade your Alternato, That is still a very basic system.

I do suggest you perform "The Big Three" upgrade, Google that term an you'll find all the information you need.

Also depending on the age of your battery, I'd suggest a nice Optima Yellow Top Deep Cycle battery.

Cheers

thanks :) never heard of that brand of battery but will look that up in a sec. expensive?

THE BIG 3?
1) Battery negative to chassis
2) Alternator to battery positive
3) Chassis to engine

is that right? how much would that cost to be done? roughly? give or take...

The big 3 are not all earth.

I have 0AWG.

But depending on what you are running, 4AWG will do the job.

I did.
Neg batt to chassis
Neg batt to eng block.(alt bracket)
Pos batt to Pos input on alt.
Pos batt term to underbonnet fuse box.
All 0AWG.

First off, i agree with the battery as this is your main reserve for power..

With all the money people spend on their systems, a lot forget the one thing that powers the system... the battery....
Apart from that, next step is making sure all the wiring can handle the loads...

think of electricity as water....
if your pipes are not thick enough, they will struggle to get the flow in time and this will create weak points....

The alternator i dont think will be an issue at all as pointed out above.

thanks for your replies everyone,

MayhemofHell,
what pipes/cables are you talking about? the stereo cables that run from the battery? or others?

yes the battery will be upgraded, but my standard battery should be right for a week shouldn't it? till my next pay day the following thursday, just not sure if i can afford another $500 odd on a battery in the same pay as getting the stereo done.

Nathan.

Generally the power lines first ...
as audio lines you will lose power on things like bass/deep/strong signals ...

Battery, it should survive without any dramas and being a VZ it may be ok in general..
but is always a good idea to, as saves you the cost on roadside/jump starts
and a healthy battery means a healthy crank..

In the mean time with your current battery, Just make sure it is not dry.. as in all the cells
are covered with distilled water and the terminals are clean and tight.

thank you for the advice, my first car, so still getting used to everything, its going in for a major service early next week 210'000km service plus a few extra things, so i will make sure they look at everything you have suggested and also see what the audio place can do on the thursday regarding the upgrading of the power lines (i assume they would do it right?)

Nathan.

makes a Ass out of U and Me

but in general a decent place should, There are a few basic rules like not running audio lines with power lines, having a decent ground loop and so on which they should follow..

But if it does come back with any issues, you know people on here will help you sort it..
If your car has the steering wheel controls, also look at something like this POST about getting them to continue working as well...
The KIT

Depending on the price of the install, you may find someone local on here willing todo it for a slab instead
