I think the government should build more artificial reefs around Christmas island. Keep them just below the waterline of course.
To all the bleeding hearts out there. If these people didnt try to come here illegally then they would still be alive.

It's very easy for us to feel resentment towards boat people/illegal immigrants/queue jumpers - whatever you want to call them. I suspect that there will be a fair split within the Australian community about these people's fate today - some will mourn, some will rejoice.

I'm no bleeding heart for them - in fact, I'm angry at the number of them arriving too. But my anger isn't directed so much at them as it is at the Government for being so utterly weak and ineffective in dealing with the problem, and the scum who deal in human cargoes for profit. I seriously doubt that any of these people would have the slightest idea what their arrival in this country means in relation to Australians struggling to put a roof over their heads or seeking financial assistance to survive. I suspect they are told by the people smugglers that Australia is a great big open, rich land that will welcome them with open arms and feed, house and clothe them until they can establish themselves. Yes, they come from drop-kick parts of the earth that should be bulldozed bare and left to rot, and their immediate value to our economy is suspect, but they would be very ignorant of the real situation and acting solely on lies and deception and sheer desparation.

Feel anger towards them if you must, but to wish them death is vulgar.

Wow... some really harsh comments. Considering children perished on that boat. The "look after out own backyard" argument is stupid. Blaming refugees on OUR governments inability to protect our own is naive. As minux said, if they stopped wasting their time on this climate change bullshit and paying that shithead Oprah millions to visit Australia (amonsgt others) there'd be plenty of opportunity to help our own.

I don't think the people bringing them out here are any worse then the people paying to be bought out.

These people jumping the que pay a pretty penny to get on those piece of **** boats. Why can't they do it legally?
Might they be rejected for some reason?

Regardless of whether you agree or disagree regarding boat people there is one key issue here.

The ALP.

Their policy reversal and dumping of TPV's has caused this mess and as such should be held to account.
There was a massive uproar with children overboard, where no one died. Where is the outroar to the ALP over this? This is much much worse than children overboard!!

It will be interesting to see how any backlash affects the government. The difference between the children overboard and this incident is that this time, the Navy isn't involved until after the event and no statements regarding children being thrown overboard are likely to arise.

Of course, the government will get away with it, unless the opposition really sticks it up them, which is highly probable and deserved after the **** the Libs copped when in government.

LOL @ all the bogan scum in this thread.

More refugees come to Australia via planes then boats. True story.

Lets rehash the definition of "refugee"
Under the United Nations Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees from 1951, a refugee is a person who (according to the formal definition in article 1A of this Convention), "owing to a well-founded fear of being persecuted for reasons of race, religion, nationality, membership of a particular social group, or political opinion, is outside the country of his nationality, and is unable to or, owing to such fear, is unwilling to avail himself of the protection of that country".

The legitimate refugees are literally running for their lives. You'd do the same thing in their situation.

It is true that most of the boat people don't have a legitmate reason for citizenship in Australia, but that isn't a reason to just blow up every boat without first checking if they are genuine refugees or not.
