And some more RAM hopefully...

I even think 1 gig is pushing it nowdays, just having windows XP and a couple of tray apps is enough to eat up 512mb and thats before loading any games up.

How do you find it goes?

i run two XP installs on my desktop PC at home... one for work/internet and one for games... the games installation i have tweaked to boot up with an initial commit charge of less than 170MB (just off memory) and only about 12 or 13 processes running... you really notice a difference by disabling a heap of unused services and background apps... and the games work fine.

-2 x 256mb ram ddr400
-gigabyte ga-7n400 (basic motherboard, nothing special. has the nForce2 chipset)
-very old (and got it for free) ata66 15gb maxtor hard drive (contains windows xp sp2)
-ata133 80gb maxtor hard drive (for homework, photos, etc)
-powercolor radeon 9600 128mb
-lg dvd burner (dual layer)
-lg 17-inch crt monitor

and im running the crappy realtek ac97 on-board sound

I never touch the memory timings cause I have no clue what they are or how they work. ram clock speed I will fiddle with... reducing it to allow more room for a cpu overclock, etc but timings such as ras to cas delay, precharge etc etc I do not understand hehe.

If, like me, you have cheap generic RAM then its probably not worth fiddling with. Some of the more expensive RAM out there is worth playing but in any case you need to know what you're doing. Theres a few guides out there on how to optimise your ram timings. Google will probably have the answer

I used to be into pc's before cars so mines a kinda oldskool fast one, its overclocked heaps and still going strong. I would like to see how these new dual core things go.

I couldnt even recall the specs so i had a look at my posts on the atomic forum i used years ago, they are as follows:

2500XP-m@ 2700mhz||Abit NF7-s V.2|| 200 gig sata wd hdd with 8mb cache || O/C radeon 9600SE || 1 gig xmspro4000||92mm Tornado||Thermalright SP97||550W antec true power||Antec superlanboy case

The CPU was equivalent to an amd 4200+ or 4.2Ghz intel P4 which was bloody fast back in 2004. I ended up getting a better video card cant remember the model tho, dvd burner and a quieter fan, there's a reason why they call it a tornado.

f*ck i was a nerd, im just looking through my old posts i cant even understand myself now. My username was specialized_skyline

Does anybody else go on this forum or used to use it?

I realised my ram is rated at 800mhz! So must be safe to bump up the clock settings on the memory?? Considering majority of ram are rated below that.

yeah clock speed you can safely go up to 800 and usually a bit over. I actually have to turn my RAM multiplier down because when going from 266MHz fsb to 390MHz, it pushed the RAM up to 1172MHz or something crazy like that lol

cheap brand DDR2-800 running at 1172 effective MHz? HELL NO lol.. no chance of it posting at that speed.

When I drop the multiplier though I can have the RAM running at just under DDR2-800 speed while the cpu is running about 1GHz faster than stock.
