My Diff is tired

Well, I finally had an opinion from two different mechanics. I jacked the car and spun the whells - had a scraping noise from the diff, no matter which side I spun by hand.
Need a new (or rebuilt) diff. My old one is so noisy now - only 101,000 km on my 1999 VT Calais. Quoted $1000 fitted for second hand (spew) or $750 for non-LSD (spew).
How much should I spend for the job - any one else same issue/problem?

$1800 from Holden for all new gears in your existing housing..

About $500, for an LSD Diff from the wreckers, $220 labour to put it in is standard. So $750 for an LSD is decent..

Source the diff yourself (ring wreckers) and you'll get it..

Ask the mechanic to break down labour and parts.. Any more then $220 for labour, find another mechanic..

Oh and you should get a single spinner for about $300..

They get louder and then they just give up..

Be sure it doesn't just require an acid wash and addictive change...people get screwed over quite often when all is required is this. About $250 worth.

i paid $50 for a VT LSD 3.08gears, the diff had only done 17,000km
out of a wrecked VT SS, i then put it in my car, being a VT/X my car wouldn't spin, and someone offered me $350 for it, so i took it out, bolted the standard diff back up and made myself $300.
