I've looked around but haven't been able to find a very straight answer as to what the mechanical differences (if any) are between the HSV 185kW 304 motors and the normal Holden 165kW. Was it just an exhaust, headers and tune? Was there any bottom end differences? Cheers guys.

The early VQ's has a SVU prefix on the engine numbers. No one has come up with what was different from a standard engine with a VU prefix.

It has to have had some change or it would've had the same prefix.

Unless the SVU had a different ECU

knock sensor, detonation sensor advanced timing, hsv cai intake, higher octane tune, exhaust 185i headers so theres a few difference ie 185i hsv engine, the vn 165i is a de tuned motor like the 220i vt series II 5.7L look what there at now 245kw VZ's so there's an example.

Only holden V8's with a roller cam were the VS series 3 and VT. The 215i strokers ran a different cam to the 165 and 185kw 5L's, but it was still a flat tappet hydraulic. It's equivalent to a Crane H268 or a Crow4001. The 200kw HSV 5L ran this cam as well. Check out cranecams.com.au for details on holden v8 cam specs.

I'll add my voice to the many others saying that the only differences between the 165 and 185 motors were knock sensor, tune, exhaust (including crappy tube type headers) and cai.

Sooo do you think the S on the SVU prefix could be taken as SENSOR type engine.

Does anyone have a VN/VQ with a SVU engine prefix and not have a knock sensor?

Was it those motors that ran the four bolt mains?
